**CRITICAL RISK** CVE-2023-27532 Veeam (Multiple Products) – Total Compromise of Host via Unauthorised Access to Credentials in Configuration Database

Background & Context

Veeam Backup & Replication is a proprietary backup app developed by Veeam for virtual environments built on VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors. The software provides backup, restore and replication functionality for virtual machines, physical servers and workstations as well as cloud-based workload. Veeam Backup & Replication is positioned as a part of the Veeam Availability Suite bundle.

Vulnerability Summary

AA vulnerable process, Veeam.Backup.Service.exe (TCP 9401 by default), allows an unauthenticated user to request encrypted credentials. Exploit allows an unauthenticated user operating within the backup infrastructure network perimeter to obtain encrypted credentials stored in the configuration database.

Impact If Exploited

Successful exploit would lead to an attacker gaining full access to the backup infrastructure hosts.

NOTE: This vulnerability has been reported by the CISA (America’s Cyber Defense Agency) to be known to be currently actively exploited in the wild as of 23rd August 2023

Official Fix & Remediation Guidance

Customers are advised to update to the latest version. This vulnerability is resolved in the following Veeam Backup & Replication build numbers: 12 (build P20230223) or 11a (build P20230227). Links to the required patches are provided in the knowledgebase articles linked in the References.

NOTE: Remediation of this vulnerability by patching to a specific version indicated may not be sufficient to secure the product against further vulnerabilities discovered in later versions, subsequent to the publication of this guidance. Unless contra-indicated, customers are therefore advised to always upgrade to the latest version of the product available.

Temporary Mitigation & Workarounds

If you use an all-in-one Veeam appliance with no remote backup infrastructure components, you can temporarily block external connections to port TCP 9401 in the backup server firewall as a temporary remediation until the patch is installed.

NOTE: Caution should always be taken in applying any temporary mitigations listed. Mitigations are only recommended in cases where patches to remediate the vulnerability are not available, or cannot safely be applied to a given environment immediately. A given mitigation may not in all cases be recommended officially by the application vendor. The viability of any given temporary mitigation measure may vary, depending on server platform and existing configuration. Mitigations listed may incompletely remediate any given vulnerability. Configuration changes to implement listed mitigations may impact/disrupt required functionality within a given customer application. Care should therefore be taken to carefully analyse any listed mitigations for appropriateness to a given environment. Customers are advised to test any configuration changes prior to their being introduced into a production environment.
