Improving our product design in 2025

As part of our latest release on Thursday, you will see a new sidebar experience when logging into the Scanner Console. This is the first major step in a set of improvements to the Console user interface we’ll be making over the course of the year, and we wanted to take a moment to talk about why that is.

Why are we changing the look and feel of AppCheck?

There are several reasons why we’ve chosen to overhaul the user interface for AppCheck in 2025.

1. Entering our second decade.

We celebrated our 10-year anniversary as a business in 2024. While a lot has changed in our system – from advances in SPA crawling, API Scanning, Infrastructure coverage, and 10,000’s of new detections – the look and feel has broadly stayed the same. Moving into our second decade as a business feels like a good time to take stock and realign our user experience towards our vision.

2. Our vision for the future.

When AppCheck was founded a decade ago, our user base was predominantly security specialists, either at organisations that were highly security focused, or at managed service providers to simplify and speed up testing cycles. Flash forward and cybersecurity is a table-stakes requirement for all organisations against a tireless and daily barrage by threat actors. A need for scale and global reach has led to larger, more complicated system architectures and more distributed teams, making IT Governance more difficult to enforce.

Against this backdrop, IT and Security teams are being asked to do more with a lot less and faster, and we are seeing a “shift-left” of security practices from later in the systems development cycle activity (with InfoSec playing gatekeeper) to continuous approaches managed by developers, testers, and operators. This change in the industry requires a redressing of the balance of security tooling vended by the industry; from the Jumbo Jet cockpits with a million switches, to cleaner, simpler, sensible, behaviours with intelligent defaults that better enable customers to succeed in keeping their attack surface secure.

We pride ourselves on the excellence of scanning technology; we are now bringing that same zeal to our users’ experience.

3. Enabling new products from AppCheck

As noted above, both the industry and our system continue to evolve at pace. With that, we aim to offer our customers the most up-to-date products and services. We started on that journey last year with the introduction of a dedicated product for managing your APIs , and our security researchers have new solutions – and some industry-firsts – in the works. Making space for more products in our system requires a design which enables these additions.

Changes coming this quarter

There will be several announcement posts over the course of this year, but we’re excited to talk about our plans for improvements over this quarter, outlined below.

Navigation

The new navigation bar will be the first big change noticed by you when logging into the system:

This change does several things. Firstly, it allows us to make better use of space in key areas of the system where there is high information density, such as the vulnerability list. This allows you to immediately see more of the information you care about.

Secondly, this has several “behind the scenes” improvements, such as making sure that the typography, colour palette, and functions and accessibility in line with the WCAG 2.0 standard, making it easier to use for all our users in the process. Lastly, this has been designed to be have a contemporary, modern feel, something that we’ve seen come up frequently as feedback in our G2 reviews.

Downloads

We are introducing a new Downloads page into the Console. We have a downloads page on our website, however, this is not particularly discoverable, especially when you are just trying to get something done. As such, we’re moving this into the Console itself so that the Scan Hub Images and other tools we provide can be found more easily.

Vulnerabilities Table

One item of feedback we’ve received from customers is it can be difficult to find the right information using the Vulnerability Table feature. Often this has come down to there being filters available but not being obvious to users.

Last year, with that in mind, we updated the design of this feature and started beta testing it internally and in a limited capacity with customers. The present incarnation of the screen looks as follows:

The current table and filters available to users

Through the beta testing we did, we found that while that was better in terms of seeing the available filters, the density of the controls was somewhat confusing. Following that, we’ve started on the next iteration which we’re hoping to make generally available during this quarter.

Feedback

These changes represent our commitment to listening to our customers on the need to improve our user experience. We are currently working on the roadmap for the remainder of the year and would welcome your feedback on pain points you’ve experienced as a user of our system. If you’d like to share and discuss, please let your account manager know.
